About the 17th Annual International RAPDASA Conference

Following the success of the 16th Annual International RAPDASA conference held in Pretoria in November 2015, we are pleased to announce the 2016 conference hosted by the Vaal University of Technology, on behalf of RAPDASA.

Conference Information

Additive Manufacturing (AM), alternatively referred to as 3D printing, is a layer-based process used to manufacture physical objects. Using AM technology enables the manufacturing of geometrically complex parts, which require a high degree of customisation. AM technologies are currently used in a wide variety of manufacturing sectors, which include Aerospace, Medical, Bio-medical, Dentistry, R&D, Automotive and many more. Throughout the years, AM has demonstrated its value, is of a disruptive nature and can be considered a technology that can be used improve quality of life for all human beings. This year’s conference will focus on Additive Manufacturing’s impact on all South Africans’ quality of life. As such, this year’s conference theme is:
“Building on the Foundations - Consolidating Impact into Products to Enhance

Quality of Life for All South Africans”
In support of this theme, the first day of the conference will build on the success created during RAPDASA 2015 and again be dedicated to a special event entitled the South African Additive Manufacturing Innovation Showcase. The showcase will allow the general public, industry, inventors, universities and funding agencies to interact with each other. The day will end with a tour through the Advanced Manufacturing Precinct, demonstrating its capacity and available services.

With respect to the conference theme, papers can be submitted under any of the following topics:
  • AM business development
  • New AM applications
  • Impact of AM on the intellectual property environment
  • Design for Additive Manufacturing
  • Reverse engineering
  • Simulation and modelling
  • Process monitoring and control
  • Material evaluation and selection
  • Post processing and qualification
  • Material / Process development
  • Product development

Who should attend?

The organising committee, on behalf of RAPDASA, invites industry, local and international research and development groups as well as product development communities to attend and participate in the conference and also .

The organising committee would like to extend a special invitation to SMMEs, entrepreneurs, inventors, engineers, product designers, toolmakers, production staff, technical directors and managers from industries involved in the design, development and manufacturing of products and components. You are welcome to participate and share experience and learning in the field of AM, or simply attend the conference and gain a better understanding of AM’s possible impact on your business.

The conference will offer participants the opportunity to:
  • Gain experience and knowledge in the AM field,
  • Interact and network with experts in the AM field,
  • Gain first-hand knowledge of the latest AM technologies available, through exhibitions and presentations,
  • Share knowledge, experiences and ideas through presentations and technical discussions.
